Meet the BCS Press Team!
Evin Wells
Head Editor
Hello there! My name is Evin, I'm in 8th grade. When I'm not working on the Student Voice articles, I'm probably playing sports, drawing, solving my Rubik's cube, or really anything! I write for Creative Works, Sports, I'm the main editor and I'm super happy to be here!
Shayla Miller
Senior Editor
Hey! I'm Shayla, I am an 18-year-old Senior in BWA. I enjoy reading, writing, hanging out with my family and playing video games like Pokemon and Ratchet and Clank. When I am done with school, I would love to become a full-time video game Let's-Player on Youtube. It would be an excellent creative outlet and I would love to be a great influence to my viewers! There is never enough creativity and imagination in the world. I'm really excited to be apart of the Student Voice again this year as a Senior Editor, writer and photo guru
Caden Wheeler
Creative Works Editor
Hello! My name is Caden and I am 14 and I love to draw, sketch, paint, craft, and anything that involves art! I live in Springfield, Oregon and I have two cats and one brother. I am in charge of the Creative Works page for the BWA newspaper. I don't really play sports, but if there was one that I would play it would be football. Thank you for reading and GO DUCKS!
India Rodriguez
Senior Editor
Hi all! My name's India! I'm a 7th grader at BWA and a writer for the BCS Student Voice. I'm a senior editor on the paper, but I stick to writing and helping with organization. When I'm not working on the paper and school, you'll find me reading, doodling, and listening to music. Or possibly singing (at the top of my lungs) and dancing around my house. I love Mexican food - eating and making - but mostly the eating part. Carne Asada and Chorizo are my favorite dishes. Oreos are also somewhere at the top of things I like, they are AMAZING. Speaking of amazing, my favorite shows are Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who (I know, I know, I'ma nerd). Rain or shine, I like being outside. Sometimes I have random conversations with my self or I get into fights with Auto-correct. People that don't know me that well may say I'm "normal" but my friends know I'm a crazy, funny, wierdo! That pretty much sums me up! Thanks for reading!
Wayce Saluskin
Sports Writer
My name is Wayce Saluskin. Some of my most favorite things to do is play sports, and read books. The books I read are mostly on sports. I am religious, a Jehovah’s Witness. Learning about God is very important to me. I am a 7th grader, and my spot on the newspaper is to write about sports, specifically basketball. I am a Native American and have several different tribes in me. Modoc, Yakima, Warm Springs, and Umatilla are my main ones. I have 4 siblings, a 5 month old, 3 year old, 5 year old, and 8 year old. There names are Hiro, Neva, Kokomo, and Wuakeen.
Jennifer Oakes
Student Spotlight
Kon’nichiwa!! I’m Jenni the Student Spotlight writer! I’m a somewhat shy, artsy thirteen year old who loves all things cute and cuddly. My dream is to work for NASA, as I have a strange love for space. I also would love to visit Japan someday. I don't watch TV that much, but one of my absolute all time favorite shows is Gravity Falls. I could talk about that all day long if I wanted to. I love to draw, and I’m pretty good at it too. Drawing and music are my top two ways to relax, along with a warm cup of mint tea. I enjoy drawing digitally too, especially animation. I’ve been animating for a year and a half or so. I enjoy it because I get to see my drawings come to life. Sayōnara! (That’s goodbye in Japanese.)
Shoshana Groom
Opinion Writer
Hello! My name is Shoshana, and I'm an opinion writer for the BCS Student Newspaper because it's one of the few ways to vent my stressful opinions without killing my natural pacifism (*weak chuckle*). Anywho, I'm a newbie to both the team and the school (yaaaay!) and am really excited to be a part of the student newspaper! My hobbies include writing, hosting murder-mystery parties (which I write--if you ever want a custom murder mystery part, just let me know!) and playing with animals.
Hannah Gotzman
Opinion Writer
Hey all! My name is Hannah Gotzman, I am a 16-year-old sophomore from a tiny little town in eastern Oregon named “Richland.” Fun fact: I have 9 brothers and 3 sisters. I enjoy reading books, writing, playing guitar, singing and anything punk rock. I’m an extreme foodie so usually you can find me with some extra hot Cheetos stashed somewhere. I am extremely active in my 4H club. I have shown Cattle, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Rabbits, and Poultry at the three fairs that I usually participate in during the summer. I also play Volleyball and I am on a Track & Field team. (Go, Pine Eagle Spartans!!!) I am very excited to be writing for all of you in the opinion section.
Lorelai Fosselman
Event Reporter
Hello! My name is Natalia, I’m 15 and a sophomore. I am an opinion writer for the BCS Student Voice. I love to write and draw. I joined the BCS Student Voice to write more and to connect more with people because I love to talk. If I’m not reading or drawing, I like to sing, dance and play the piano. I love to learn languages and I speak two for now. I would like to learn more and be a polyglot. I’m excited to be writing for the BCS Student Voice and be a part of the group!

Sup. My name is Lorelai, I’m 11 years old. I love reading, writing, and playing/watching soccer. When I’m not breaking things with my soccer ball, I’m usually reading, writing, listening to music, or sleeping. I have five soccer balls and I named all of them (It’s not weird!). I play the piano and love music. I have to write everyday or else I’d probably lose my mind. I’m pumped to be joining the Student Voice as the new events reporter! Thank you for reading.
Julianna Hope
Creative Works
Hello there! My name is Julianna and I am a socially awkward sixth grader.
I LOVE to read, I spend most of my free time doing just that.
I also enjoy writing, painting and photography. I'd spent months bugging my parents about martial arts until they finally signed me up for jujitsu. I have been doing that for over a year now. I am really exited to see how this works out and I'm psyched to be part of it!
Paige Chandler
Creative Works
You might notice that I'm a my little pony person and I create them all the time this one is my favorite one, her name is Sapphire Pudding. I also enjoy reading Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter. Along with watching Pixar movies, Star Wars, and of course My Little Pony. I am a creative works writer for the BCS Student Voice. My favorite hobby is definitely art, I love the way it makes me feel. My favorite music is pop and I love ice cream.
Sophia Hoffman
Creative Works
Hello! My name is Sophia Hoffman as you’ve probably already guessed but please call me Sophie. I’m in 6th grade, and am eleven years old. I like traditional art, but am not very good at it. Thankfully for any of you who don’t want to go blind, I decided to transfer to digital art, which I am much better at and will not make you go blind with. I enjoy playing violin, and doing taekwondo. I also, I know it sounds weird, love schoolwork. I go to Strive Academy in Junction City Oregon. When I’m not doing schoolwork, doing taekwondo, or doing violin, you will find me playing with my two dogs, Tika and Cookie, as seen above. Tika is an eight month Great Pyrenees, and Cookie is an 11 year old Japanese Chin. This year, I am one of the photographers, and the photo editor, but I do write articles here and there. My dream is to become a rocket engineer and graduate from MIT. I am really glad to be part of the team this year and hopefully beyond!
Ruqaiyah Damrah
Founder/Supervisor
My name is Ruqaiyah, and I'm the founder of the BCS Student Voice! I'm no longer a BCS student, but I still stick around to help out with anything that's needed or guide the transition to the new editor! I'm currently a high school Junior/college sophomore, and I'm majoring in business. When I'm not getting involved in social activism or my school's office/student government, I'm hanging out with my friends or siblings, reading, writing, fangirling over K-pop and musicals, or doing something dorky.
Mrs. Angela Schwartz
Teacher
My name is Angela Rosales Schwartz, but I go by Angie. Here at BWA I am an AT, Electives grading teacher, SPED teacher, and am aspiring to create an Arts program here at our school. My big vision is to help BWA become legendary by supporting students in creative projects; and to support the BCS Voice in becoming one of the greatest student online news websites ever. Besides all varieties of recreating and sports, my favorite hobby is drawing and printing cool T-shirts for people. Portland, Or is my birth place, but I am currently residing in Baker City, OR with my family. It is beautiful here, and nature is the best part, especially for recreation!
Dr. Daniel Huld
Staff Sponsor
Outside of Baker Charter Schools I have a lot of pursuits and interests but above them all is my family and my faith. I live in the Portland area with my wife and twin daughters. We live a full life with lots of moving pieces. Many of my hobbies are side projects to be the best husband and father I can be. My daughters are into basketball, dance, LEGOS, bike riding and being active. My wife and I love to enjoy the PNW life of enjoying the many amazing restaurants and adventures around the area. We also enjoy traveling when we can. However at the end of the day if it was up to me I would be hiking, climbing or skiing everyday! I am a huge believer in our students and love the student led nature of our paper. One of my greatest joys in life is seeing students or staff members step up and accomplish amazing things they didn’t think they could. Getting students together and building a press team from all over Oregon is pretty incredible and I am proud of this team.
Mr. Eric Layton
Teacher
Greetings! I am excited to join BWA Student Voice as a faculty advisor. I live and teach in Baker City. I’ve taught secondary science for the last 10 years and bring a small amount of newspaper experience with me. I wrote and edited for my high school newspaper, The Viking Log from Forest Grove High School waaaayy back in the late 90s.
I think good communication is one of our best tools for solving our biggest problems. I look forward to helping students discuss their world, highlight what they are proud of, and digest things they may still be coming to terms with.
